Velvet is an 11 year old Lab who is recovering from spinal surgery. In December 2005, Velvet escaped from her family’s backyard. When they found her 20 minutes later, she was sitting by the side of the road. When they tried to move her, they discovered that she was unable to move her rear limbs. Velvet’s family rushed her to U.C. Davis Veterinary School where she underwent surgery (Hemilaminectomy) on her spine.

Velvet’s recovery has been remarkable.

Velvet has been receiving daily physical therapy to increase the strength of her rear legs. When she started physical therapy in January, she had some movement in her left rear leg, but her right rear leg had no movement or sensation. Daily hydrotherapy sessions along with theraball treatments have helped Velvet walk again. Although she still has a way to go, Velvet can now walk unassisted in the tank and on dry land.

Velvet’s family deserves a LOT of credit for their amazing dedication to her recovery, not to mention all of their help with her therapy. GO VELVET!!
